Encouraging Kids to Eat More Fruits and Veggies

Are your kids not eating enough fruits and veggies each day? Here's tips on how to make children excited about eating everything from apricots to zucchini.

Encouraging Kids to Eat More Fruits and Veggies

We all know that eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is essential to good health for both children and adults. But many American children are only eating one or two servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Want to help encourage your kids to eat more fruits and vegetables? Here's some great tips and easy back-to-school snack ideas.

  1. Get kids involved in choosing the fruits and vegetables that your family buys and eats. Let your kids have some input into your dinner menus, and have them pick out some of the produce you purchase.
  2. Buy a variety of fresh, frozen, canned and dried fruits and vegetables, as well as 100% fruit juices with no added sugar. Canned and frozen options are great for quick meals and dried fruits and vegetables are fun snacks. Fruit juices such as Florida's Natural Orange Juice provide many valuable nutrients and are a healthy way to add flavor to smoothies, fruit dips and more.
  3. Try adding more servings of fruits and vegetables to your dinner recipes. When cooking pasta, casseroles and dishes like meatloaf or even nachos, sprinkle in more veggies. Try corn, spinach, peas, green beans and green peppers, for starters.
  4. Always have some fresh fruits (apples, plums and oranges) in a bowl on the kitchen table and ready to eat. You can also make sure there's some celery and carrots on the top shelf of the refrigerator that have been washed and cut.

And here's a quick and healthy school snack that will encourage your kids to eat a variety of fruits:

Fruit and Applesauce Dip

  • 1 cup no-sugar-added applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons Florida's Natural Orange Juice
  • 1 cup low-fat strawberry yogurt
  • Slices of your favorite fruits such as strawberries, apples, bananas, pears, kiwi, pineapple or grapes.

Combine the applesauce, orange juice and yogurt in a bowl and mix until well blended. Pour into plastic container and wrap up some fruit slices, too.
